Washington dog owners logged more than 120 group fitness sessions at local parks during the first week of July 2026, according to sign-in sheets from two recurring meetups.
The trend has accelerated this summer because many residents shifted workouts outdoors after indoor gym memberships rose 18 percent in price last year. People want low-cost ways to stay active while handling pet care responsibilities, and the city’s network of trails supports both needs at once.
Rock Creek Park’s Beach Drive section between Military Road and Broad Branch Road stays closed to cars on weekends, letting runners and walkers move freely with dogs on six-foot leashes. The 1.8-mile stretch sees organized pack runs every Saturday at 8 a.m. led by the Rock Creek Runners group, which formed in 2022. East Potomac Park along Ohio Drive offers a flatter 3.2-mile loop popular with large-breed owners who meet Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. for intervals and body-weight circuits.
Both sites sit within a short Capital Bikeshare ride from downtown neighborhoods. Riders can dock bikes at the station near the Rock Creek Park Nature Center or the one by the East Potomac Golf Course before starting their sessions.
The District Department of Parks and Recreation reported 47,000 dog-walking permits issued through June 2026, up from 39,000 the previous year. No entry fees apply at either park, though participants in the Rock Creek Runners sessions pay a voluntary $5 donation that covers printed route maps and water stations. The groups require dogs to be current on rabies vaccinations, a rule posted on the DPR website since 2024.
Residents new to the routine can check the DPR calendar for updated start times or join the Rock Creek Runners email list for weather cancellations. Arriving with waste bags and a standard six-foot leash keeps everyone compliant with posted park rules.
