More than 420 residents signed up for the July edition of the Rock Creek Fitness Challenge, which began July 5 and runs through the end of the month.

Organizers point to rising demand for low-cost group activities that fit around work schedules in a city where many commute by bike or foot. The challenge pairs weekly runs and bike rides with optional strength sessions, giving participants a structured way to meet others without joining a gym.

Routes through familiar neighborhoods

Participants meet at the Rock Creek Park Nature Center on Glover Road NW each Saturday at 8 a.m. for a 5-kilometer loop that crosses the park’s western trails and exits near the Cleveland Park Metro. A separate Wednesday evening ride starts at the Capital Bikeshare station on 17th Street NW near Dupont Circle, covering flat paths along the National Mall before returning through Foggy Bottom. Both routes stay within District boundaries and avoid heavy traffic corridors.

Numbers behind the turnout

City records show Capital Bikeshare logged 1.8 million rides in the first half of 2026, up 12 percent from the same period last year. The current fitness challenge charges a $12 registration fee that covers a commemorative water bottle and access to a private online group where members post times and arrange car-free meetups. Past editions have drawn runners from Adams Morgan, Shaw, and Capitol Hill, with average group sizes of 35 to 50 people per session.

Residents can register through the DC Department of Parks and Recreation website or at any staffed Capital Bikeshare kiosk until July 20. Those new to group exercise are encouraged to check with a physician before starting and to begin with the shorter options listed on the schedule.
