Washington DC National Mall: Monuments, Memorials & Museums
The National Mall is America's front yard — a 1.9-mile greensward stretching from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol Building, flanked by the world's greatest concentration of free museums and lined with memorials that collectively tell the story of the United States. The Smithsonian Institution's 11 museums on the Mall — including the National Air and Space Museum, Natural History Museum, American History Museum, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture — are all free and could collectively occupy weeks of exploration. The Lincoln Memorial's 36 columns represent the states of the Union at Lincoln's death; standing where Martin Luther King Jr delivered "I Have a Dream" on 31 August 1963 is one of America's most powerful civic experiences. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial's 58,318 names etched in black granite remain genuinely moving. The Washington Monument offers 360-degree views from 555 feet but requires advance timed-entry tickets. Allow a full day minimum; comfortable shoes are non-negotiable.
