Washington DC Neighbourhoods: Georgetown, Adams Morgan & Beyond
Washington DC's distinct neighbourhoods offer radically different experiences of the capital, each with its own architecture, demographics, and character. Georgetown, the city's oldest neighbourhood, predates the capital itself — cobblestone streets, Federal-period townhouses, and a waterfront canal anchor an area now defined by upmarket boutiques and restaurants on M Street and Wisconsin Avenue. Dupont Circle has been the city's progressive intellectual hub since the 1970s — home to embassies, independent bookshops, gay bars, and Sunday farmers markets. Adams Morgan on 18th Street NW is the multicultural dining corridor: Ethiopian injera, Salvadoran pupusas, and late-night bars in an energetic mix. Shaw and U Street NW, once "Black Broadway," is experiencing a cultural renaissance while retaining its jazz club heritage at Bohemian Caverns. Capitol Hill's Eastern Market neighbourhood offers the city's most genuine community feel, with a 140-year-old public market and independent restaurants spilling onto tree-lined streets.
