Dupont Circle DC: Restaurants, Galleries & the Heart of LGBTQ+ Washington

Dupont Circle is one of Washington DC's most beloved and liveable neighbourhoods — a Victorian-era residential district centred on its famous circular park and fountain, surrounded by embassies, independent bookshops, art galleries, and a restaurant and bar scene that manages to be both sophisticated and genuinely welcoming. For decades it has been the centre of DC's LGBTQ+ community, and that history gives the neighbourhood an openness and creative energy that distinguishes it from the more official Washington of the monuments and museums.

The circular park at the neighbourhood's heart is one of the finest urban public spaces in DC — well-shaded, reliably populated with chess players, dog walkers, and office workers eating lunch, and beautifully maintained around the classical fountain at its centre. The streets radiating outward from the circle are lined with handsome row houses, many converted into embassies or small businesses. Connecticut Avenue NW is the main commercial artery, with independent restaurants, wine bars, and the remarkable Kramerbooks & Afterwords Café — a legendary combination bookshop and restaurant open 24 hours on weekends.

Dupont's art scene is anchored by the Phillips Collection — Washington's oldest private museum of modern art, housed in a grand 19th-century mansion and its adjoining modern wing, with an exceptional permanent collection including Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party and major works by Rothko, Mondrian, and Hopper. The neighbourhood's restaurant scene is strong and international, with several of DC's best Thai, Japanese, and Italian restaurants concentrated within walking distance of the circle. Dupont Circle is served by the eponymous metro station on the Red Line.
