Three restaurants debuted on 9th Street NW in Shaw during the first half of 2026, replacing two longtime spots that closed last winter.
The openings track with increased residential construction in the area bounded by Florida Avenue and Rhode Island Avenue, where new apartment buildings have added hundreds of units since 2024. Diners now encounter shorter waits at lunch spots and more varied price points than five years ago.
At 9th and T Streets, the former site of a casual American grill now houses a Lebanese spot called Cedar Table that serves mezze plates priced from $9 to $16. Two blocks south, a renovated rowhouse on 9th Street between Q and R opened as an all-day cafe called Ninth Line, offering espresso drinks and sandwiches that average $14. Both locations sit within the Shaw Main Streets program boundaries, which has tracked business licenses for food service since 2018.
Older establishments have adjusted hours and menus to compete. The original Ben's Chili Bowl on U Street, three blocks west, extended its late-night service through 2 a.m. on weekends starting in March. Data from the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington shows the city recorded 52 new restaurant openings between January and June 2026, with Shaw accounting for nine of them.
Reservations at Cedar Table fill by 6 p.m. on weeknights, so callers should book at least two days ahead. Ninth Line maintains walk-in counter seating until 3 p.m. daily. Visitors can check the Shaw Main Streets website for an updated list of openings before heading out, as two additional permits for full-service restaurants remain under review for the 900 block of 9th Street.
